AI ISN'T NEW: "This Is Just New to Everybody Else": A VFX Pioneer on 20 Years of AI in Movies
Sep 16, 2026 · 46:27
"We've been using computers to make every frame of movies for quite some time now. This is another set of computers making frames." To most people, AI in filmmaking looks brand new. To Barbara Ford Grant, it's the latest turn in a cycle she has worked through again and again. She pioneered the color pipeline at DreamWorks, delivered Katana and Arnold at Sony Pictures Imageworks, led digital human work at Digital Domain, ran creative technology at HBO and Meow Wolf, and launched the Trilith LED volume. Now a Visual Effects Society Fellow, she sits down with Machine Cinema co-founder Fred Grinstein on GenTalks. They cover why every technology wave starts with a room full of misfits, why "nobody ever got fired for using RenderMan" still explains how studios weigh AI, what the industry lost when production scattered across a hundred vendors, and why the next generation needs mentors as much as it needs new tools. "We've used AI for a very long time in lots of different ways, particularly in visual effects. This is just new to everybody else." - Hype isn't new either. Every wave, from digital matte painting to digital humans, has brought competing approaches, internal politics and a few ideas that grow legs. - AI is in a "pre-realization" phase: the pieces exist, and the next step is sharing, controlling and scaling assets so people can collaborate in a meaningful way. - Studios weigh AI as a risk decision, and the risk is not only legal. It is reputation, relationships with talent and the quality of the work. - Production scattered across locations and vendors for scale and incentives. What got lost was the shared room where people learned by watching dailies together. - "Collective effervescence" is the physical effect of a shared experience, and it's why concerts, the World Cup and Meow Wolf work. - Newcomers are building with powerful new tools. What's missing is an understanding of the lineage behind them, and mentors to pass it on. - The biggest opportunity with generative tools and real-time rendering is iterating to a high level of fidelity on your own before spending real money.
